New Features and Opportunities in Microsoft Word
- Copilot in Word — From a Blank Page to a Structured Draft
Copilot in Word is the most prominent new feature: with a single line of instructions it can generate a draft, reshape content, change the tone or intent, and summarize long documents (even up to ~80,000 words), while using up to three reference files from OneDrive or SharePoint as sources.
Features include Draft with Copilot, Transform with Copilot (e.g., “make it more concise,” “change to a formal tone”), and Inspire me, which continues writing based on existing content.
Important: Usage requires an appropriate Microsoft 365 (i.e., Copilot) license and the correct update channel (Current or Monthly Enterprise). On the Semi-Annual Channel, Copilot in desktop apps is not available.
If the Copilot button is not visible in Word, you should check the account and license, obtain the latest Office build, refresh the license (File → Account → Update License), and in Account Privacy enable “Experiences that analyze your content” and “All connected experiences.”
- Multi‑Step Workflows
Microsoft has introduced Agent Mode (so‑called “vibe working”), which enables multi‑step, conversational collaboration with Word. In practice, this means the AI asks follow‑up questions, iteratively refines the draft, maintains context, and executes complex requests in a single session (e.g., summarization, style alignment, and merging sections).
Early previews of Agent Mode and Copilot Chat in Word for Windows (and improvements in Word for the web: tables, merge formatting on paste, link previews) are shown in Insider previews.
- New Ways to Collaborate
Word has unified Modern comments: contextual view and list view, support for @mentions with notifications, an Assign to option (turning a comment into a task), and safer comment publishing (“Post” / Ctrl+Enter).
Comments are consistent across Word versions (desktop, web) and related Office apps (Excel, PowerPoint), with switching between View/Review/Edit modes for clearer collaboration.
- Stronger Integration with the Web
Enhancements in Word for the web (online version): a new start menu, better table editing, the ability to rename the file directly in the document header, Merge Formatting functionality when pasting, and link previews—all aimed at faster document work without switching between apps.
These improvements complement broader Copilot updates that Microsoft also showcases on the Word/M365 blog.
- New Packages and Licensing
Word 2024 (as part of Office 2024) is a perpetual license release featuring the new Office 2024 look, Document Recovery (automatically reopening all unsaved documents after a crash), support for ODF 1.4, quick switching between modes (View/Review/Edit), and the ability to delete all resolved comments.
Key point: Copilot is not included in Office 2024 (perpetual one‑time purchase)—it is part of Microsoft 365 subscription plans (with Copilot access depending on the user license).
- Citations and Bibliography, Built‑In Source Manager
Word’s References tab includes managing sources (Source Manager), inserting citations, generating a bibliography and list of citations, and automatically updating the bibliography and citation list to refresh after changes. You can choose among various styles (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.).
Practical guides show how to edit or reuse sources across documents and quickly refresh the bibliography when new citations are added.
